UNODC
United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
ABOUT
The United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime or the UNODC is the United Nation’s focal point for dealing with drug, organized crime as well as terrorism on an international level that coordinates and cooperates with other members to strengthen international security and criminal justice. Among other things, the UNODC responds to the increasing risks posed by drug trafficking, which remains an acute problem in countries with unstable political systems and ineffective governance. The issue to be addressed in “Drug Trafficking Dynamics Across Iraq and the Middle East” aims to explain the complex and changing structure of the medicinal narcotics in this strategically important region. Iraq and the larger Middle East region are susceptible to drug trafficking due to issues to do with vulnerability, Age, Ladenism and economic instability. These challenges owe to the growth of crime gangs who use regional insecurity to traffic both local and international narcotics. It therefore calls for a multi sectoral, multi country, multiyear, multidimensional and comprehensive regional strategy that inter alia focuses on enhancing law enforcement, building country and regional capacity, seeking international support to stem the supply of Illicit drugs and supporting sustainable peace and development in the region.
